Every year, New Coug Orientation (NCO) seeks highly motivated students to serve as Orientation Counselors (OCs) for all our orientation programs.

Orientation Counselors (OC’s) are ambassadors of Washington State University (WSU) in Pullman, WA. During NCO. OCs help incoming students, their families, and supporters to aid in their transition to WSU. OCs are extensively trained to be familiar with WSU resources, academic departments, the advising and registration system, the Pullman community, and campus life. Most importantly, OCs are passionately committed to their fellow Cougs and are advocates for student success.


Qualifications

  • Must be an undergraduate student Spring 2023 semester and Fall 2023 semester enrolled in at least six (6) or more credit hours at WSU Pullman.
  • Must be in good standing in the academic major and be free of university disciplinary sanctions.
  • Applicant chosen must pass a background check prior to employment.
  • Must be available full-time during the summer and may not be enrolled in summer courses or extracurricular involvements that may interfere with the NCO programming due to conflicting times.
  • Additional employment outside of this job will not be possible and taking classes will need to be discussed and approved.

Summary of Duties

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following: 
  • Preparation of small group activities through New Coug Orientation
  • Engage with, assist, support NCO participants and guide to and from program events and residence, dining, and medical facilities.
  • Communicate with incoming students over the Summer pre and post NCO sessions.
  • Support incoming Cougs, families, and supporters by staying connected throughout all of NCO program days.
  • Serve as a representative of WSU by fully participating in all the summer programming encompassing our General New Coug Orientation, Transfer New Coug Orientation, Spring New Coug Orientation, Week of Welcome events, La Bienvenida, and other new student programming events/activities.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with a variety of internal and external campus partners.
  • Abide by University safety protocols and standard operating procedures.
  • Serve on student panels during orientation sessions.
  • Set-up and tear-down of various elements during orientation sessions. Will move boxes and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds for various needs.
  • Maintain, track, and manage inventory of NCO supplies.
  • Opening, closing, and checking of technology of NCO office, program, and event spaces.
  • Ensure that all spaces used by OCs are kept clean, orderly, and ready for future use.
  • Participate and aide in the development, planning, and execution of Orientation programming events and activities for families, supporters, students, and WSU staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student information in accordance with FERPA and HIPPA laws and WSU policies.
  • Input, maintain, update, and manage student data information to databases.
  • Participates in training development and attend and participate in pre-program briefings and end of program debriefs. 
  • Refer students, families, and supporters appropriately to other services on campus and academic departments.
  • Assist in handling complex student situations by connecting students to appropriate NCO or WSU staff; be flexible to circumstances that may arise and prioritize tasks when needed.
  • Develop appropriate lines of communication with New Student Enrollment administrative personnel to ensure issues are promptly reported, handled, and resolved. 
  • Provide feedback on NCO programs, initiatives, and publications.
  • Able and willing to work a flexible schedule, including early morning, nights, and weekends.
  • Other relevant tasks as assigned and needed.


Time Commitments 

  • Attendance in UNIV 497 OC leadership development training for remaining of spring semester (flexible arrangements can be made). The duration of this position is March (limited hours training and planning), with full time work starting May 19 through August. Additional hours and work may be available Sept - January 2024.
  • During the summer/early fall sessions in May, June, July, August you will be working up to 40 hours weekly with the possibility of over-time if needed by the program. Programming days of work are typically 3 days on and 1 day off, two days on and 1 day off, or a back-to-back working schedule with planned time off over July 4, and August.


Training

  • May 16-19  – Training 9 am – 7 pm (Wed-Friday)
  • May 19 – Move in to Stephenson 5-7 pm (Friday)
  • May 23-25 – Training -possible retreat (Tues – Thursday)
  • May 31-June 2 – Training 9 am – 7 pm (Wed-Friday)
  • June 5-6 – Final Summer Prep (Monday-Tuesday)

Programs

La Bienvenida
La Bienvenida is a special campus visit for the parents and the families of incoming students attending Washington State University’s Pullman campus. This event is conducted entirely in Spanish and will introduce families and students to the life-changing experience at WSU. You will learn about our commitment to students’ success and meet some of the people who will help you achieve your college dreams. 

Transfer New Coug Orientation 
Our two-day orientation program in March, June, and July, focusing on the transfer experience at WSU. This is an express orientation program for students who have over 40+ quarter credits or 27+ semester credits.

General New Coug Orientation
Our three-day orientation program is offered in June and July. Students will be emailed, via their official WSU email, their individual advising appointment time. First-time college students and transfer students are welcome to join this program. 

Week of Welcome
Week of Welcome is a week-long event on the WSU – Pullman campus that combines academic and social programming to help new and returning students kick off the new academic year. The programming will focus on supporting your navigation with topics such as housing and financial aid, help you make connections with other new and returning students, and teach you more about academic preparedness, social identity, campus engagement, and other important topics transitioning to college life.

Spring New Coug Orientation 
Spring Orientation is for first-year students starting at WSU Pullman in Spring 2023. The mandatory in-person program will provide you with information on preparing for classes, student life, and meeting with fellow incoming Cougs and Orientation Counselors.

Related Activities
  • All OCs will be expected to contribute additional time and effort to orientation as needed (i.e. skit filming, photography sessions, University Convocation video filming, etc.).
  • OCs are also required to take a required class (UNIV 497) to better help equip OCs for the summer. It will take place spring 2023. (For students hired in March hiring round, accommodations for class participation and material will be available).
