Kohl's

Visual Merchandiser

July 2023 • Onalaska, WI

What I liked

I have a strong appreciation for our management team and my colleagues. Their friendly and supportive nature creates a positive and enjoyable work environment.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish would have been different is that I had hoped for a more instructive first day on the registers, as my trainer's lack of organization and constant distractions made it challenging to learn effectively.

Advice

My one piece of advice is that the customers always comes first. No matter what the task is at hand, the customer comes first because they are why we are at work.

I loved the community and positive work environment. They did a great job of making interns feel welcomed and valued, and gave us meaningful tasks.

Sales Associate

July - September 2018 • Timonium, MD

What I liked

Many of my coworkers were very kind so the work environment was enjoyable. There was also a really good employee discount that I used often.

What I wish was different

I wish they had not hired so many employees, especially part-time employees because it was difficult to get a decent amount of hours. I also wish the pay was higher for the amount of work that had to be done each day.

Advice

Do not underestimate the amount of work that retail demands-work hard and remember that this type of job requires you to have patience.

Production Intern

June - August 2022 • Menomonee Falls, WI

What I liked

The company culture. All of the full-time employees said that they felt supported by Kohl's and recognized as a person. The pay was also really great, and we got paid on a weekly basis so that was a plus. I really liked my team as well, my coach and manager were amazing.

What I wish was different

Our internship was hybrid, so the first four weeks were in-person and the last six were online. I honestly loved the hybrid schedule, but I wish they had organized their time better. We spent the first two weeks in-person largely removed from our team, so I barely had time to interact with my coach and manager.

Advice

Just be super open and receptive to your team. Everyone at Kohl's is really excited when the interns come in, and if you show your coach that you're eager to learn and open to feedback and seeing where the process takes you, you'll do really well.

Data Science Intern

June - August 2022 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

Kohl's has a great company culture; everyone was friendly and helpful. I got to work directly on impactful projects on a balance team of program managers, software engineers, data scientists, and a product designer. I also appreciated that there were frequent check-ins on the interns to ensure that our experience was going well. And you get Kohl's discounts and merch!

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out! Whether it's an employee whose work/experience you're interested in, or another intern whose background intrigues you, there's a lot to be gained from those chats.

Retail Salesperson

June - August 2022 • Wayne, NJ

What I liked

I liked that I was working with management and coworkers that were dedicated to helping me succeed in what I was doing, and that everyday was a learning experience in customer service.

What I wish was different

I wish that there could have been more communication and organization while I was working--like many retail jobs peopel call out and the store gets busy and it's a lot to juggle at all times, so I wish that there could have been more open communication about how we as employees and management would come together to keep everything clean and organized.

Advice

A piece of advice I would give is be prepared to move around a lot, and be trained on everything. I've worked collectively for this company for almost 2 years, having applied to be a sales associate originally, and done jobs in customer service, amazon return, in store fulfillment, as well as drive up/in-store pick up.

If you are interested in retail, this is a great internship. You will learn the day-to-day operations of a high-volume department store and act as a manager at times. You will also learn a lot about customer service.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been maybe two weeks longer, as it was only an eight-week internship.

Advice

Try to learn as much as you can. You need to be a self-starter to be successful in this internship.

Store Associate

June - August 2022 • Hiram, GA

What I liked

It was a fast-paced job that took a couple of weeks to get used to, but I ended up enjoying it because there was always a task.

What I wish was different

I do wish I'd received more required training, in the beginning, considering it was my first department store job. Although I was able to overcome this obstacle during

Advice

Most of the time, there is always work to be done, so it is fast-paced but not obnoxious. It's an excellent job for those who like to do tasks or work during their shifts. Also, I'm not sure how all stores are; of course, this was just my experience.

What I liked

Lots of opportunities to network with other interns. Learning based; got to learn about all different departments and find where your interests are. Everyone very willing to meet with you and chat about opportunities. Hybrid- one month in office, 6 weeks virtual. Nice blend of in person and remote work.

Service Associate

July 2017 • Layton, UT

What I liked

The schedule is flexible for when I need days off or can't work at certain times.

What I wish was different

More explaination on what you are doing after you are originally trained. I was never actually trained in anything other than customer service, which is my department.

Advice

Try to learn quickly and pay attention to what one person does. You only get a few hours of training.

Operations Associate

July 2019 • Ronkonkoma, NY

What I liked

The work environment is amazing. Everyone is friendly, and no one tries to make me feel isolated or left out. Moreover, everyone is willing to help others when in need, which wasn't present in a job I had previously.

What I wish was different

Some sections of the store are a bit unorganized, which made it difficult to find items.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help. I have made many mistakes, and I've asked people for help countless of times, but it's important to learn what you don't understand, instead of sitting down and being confused. People are willing to help.
